India, officially the Republic of India (Hindi: भारत गणराज्य Bhārat Gaṇarājya; see also other Indian languages), is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second-most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east, India has a coastline of 7,517 kilometres (4,700 mi). It is bordered by Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, and the Maldives in the Indian Ocean.

Home to the Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four major religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated here, while Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam arrived in the first millennium CE and shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by the British East India Company from the early eighteenth century and colonised by the United Kingdom from the mid-nineteenth century, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by widespread non-violent resistance.

India is a republic consisting of 28 states and seven union territories with a parliamentary system of democracy. It has the world's twelfth largest economy at market exchange rates and the fourth largest in purchasing power. Economic reforms since 1991 have transformed it into one of the fastest growing economies; however, it still suffers from high levels of poverty, illiteracy, disease, and malnutrition. A pluralistic, multilingual, and multiethnic society, India is also home to a diversity of wildlife in a variety of protected habitats.

A. Endemic corruption in many states - The legal correction process in India proper is catastrophically slow, taking years and sometimes upwards of a decade for some cases to complete the trial process. In an era of near instantaneous decision making a 18th century judicial and legislative model - doesn't really work. Total lack of consistent infrastructure - While certainly there are some parts of the major cities which are becoming increasingly well developed from an infrastructure perspective, there is a total lack of country-wide infrastructure development, due to the vast population and actual economics of the state(s). This has dramatically improved over time, but still is spotty in many respects. Overspecialization and dependency on… [cont.]

How much money ( ) would I need to travel around India for 2 months?
Q. I am planning to travel around India for 2 months in September. I would be going with my boyfriend so we would be sharing a room. It would be nice to do it quite cheaply, but probably not staying in hostels all the time, but apparently b&b type accomodation is quite cheap. We are not extravagant but wouldn't be too frugal either. The price would include accomodation, meals, sightseeing, travel within the country, but not flights to India (which is approx 500). Any advice from people who have travelled round India would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

A. Unfortunately it's 10 years since I backpacked in India and I can't remember what I paid for anything although I have very fond memories of a lot of aspects of the trip. If you go to the Lonely Planet website, select India and then look at the Money section, it'll tell you roughly what to expect to budget for, per day. Alternatively, search through their Thorn Tree section on India and check out other people's questions & answers. Add a bit on for drinks (although they are cheap, they eat into your budget), a bit more sightseeing than you might expect, the occassional nice meal (2 months is a long time in India) and the occassional upgrade to a nicer hotel plus the odd souvenier that you WILL buy, despite any intentions not to. Note… [cont.]

What tax rules apply to a US Citizen working in India for 6 months while being on US payroll?
Q. My employer is sending me to India for 6 months. I will be traveling multiple countries during that time but will alway be returning to India (company-provided guesthouse). I will be given a daily per diem while away from US and all travel expenses will be paid for by the company. At the end of 6 months, I will return to my home in California. During my stint in Asia, I will continue to maintain my home in CA and bear all related expenses. Are there any issues that need to be considered from a taxation perspective from both US and Indian law? Is there a certain period beyond which my company cannot continue to pay me in US dollars into my US account and I must pay taxes in India? If my company temporarily decides that it might be better… [cont.]

A. You are US citizen. If you work in India for a US company and get paid by the US company in USA, then nothing will change and you will file as usual. You won't be paying any taxes in India and need not report anything in India. If you get paid in India by a company registered in India, on your pay in India you will pay taxes in India. You will also have to add this income on line 1 of your Form 1040. Then you will fill Form 1116 to claim Foreign Tax credit on line 47 of Form 1040. If your stay in India is for a longer duration than you can claim Foreign Earned Income exclusion up to around $85,000. For more information read IRS publication 54: Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad.
