How was India affected by the export of their cotton to Britain?
Q. Can anyone give me a few websites that will help with this question? I need to know how both sides (India & Britain) were affected by the import/export of cotton from India. I already have some information about Britain's effects, but I can't find anything pertaining to India.

A. The export of cotton as a raw material to England during what is commonly known as the British 'Raj' (Reign) had a mostly adverse effect on the country. 1) The British rulers forced Indian peasants and farmers to cultivate cotton and other cash crops instead of the food crops needed by the local population. They were payed measly amounts for this cotton and could not protest. This lead to poverty and huge food shortages. The best, most fertile land was used for cotton and other cash crops while inferior land was utilised for food. 2) This cotton mostly went to the mills in places like Lancashire and Manchester, where machines were used to make cloth. This cloth was not only sold in Britain, but also in India. It was much cheaper than… [cont.]

What method the people of India must utilise to write off corruption from India?
Q. India could get a place in corrupt countries and this is shameful. Therefore, time has come when people of India must think of methods through which they could write off corruption from the indian politics and from the administration in india.
Asked by Dalilp Singh w - Fri Oct 3 07:55:00 2008 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Corruption needs to be written off from every sector where it is present. There cannot be any written rules or norms for writing them off. Penalty, Imprisonment, Warnings have all become age old adages which dont seem to have much impact. These methods are regulatory to the extent of keeping a check on Corrupt minded people, however for Wiping it off completely only SELF-Regulation can help. Honesty and non corrupt attitude needs to come from within in the form of self realization. Awareness can be created...but Awakening needs to come from self.

What will it take for India to overpower Australia in cricket?
Q. A population of over 1 billion and a lot of its citizens are hard working and talented people. But somehow beating Australia still remains a near impossible task in cricket. Australia is very good in sports, not just cricket but in olympics too -- they win lots of golds, silvers and bronze too. For India olympic medal is next to impossible. Australia also played in soccer world cup 2006 -- India can't play in soccer world cup for a very long time. So despite such large population, skill and talent why India cannot compete with Australia in sports?

What tax rules apply to a US Citizen working in India for 6 months while being on US payroll?
Q. My employer is sending me to India for 6 months. I will be traveling multiple countries during that time but will alway be returning to India (company-provided guesthouse). I will be given a daily per diem while away from US and all travel expenses will be paid for by the company. At the end of 6 months, I will return to my home in California. During my stint in Asia, I will continue to maintain my home in CA and bear all related expenses. Are there any issues that need to be considered from a taxation perspective from both US and Indian law? Is there a certain period beyond which my company cannot continue to pay me in US dollars into my US account and I must pay taxes in India? If my company temporarily decides that it might be better… [cont.]
Asked by AD - Sun Aug 19 03:46:41 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You are US citizen. If you work in India for a US company and get paid by the US company in USA, then nothing will change and you will file as usual. You won't be paying any taxes in India and need not report anything in India. If you get paid in India by a company registered in India, on your pay in India you will pay taxes in India. You will also have to add this income on line 1 of your Form 1040. Then you will fill Form 1116 to claim Foreign Tax credit on line 47 of Form 1040. If your stay in India is for a longer duration than you can claim Foreign Earned Income exclusion up to around $85,000. For more information read IRS publication 54: Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad.

Asked by Ibrahim F - Thu Aug 14 14:01:18 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. India, is quite frankly, utterly confused. Because it's a post-colonial country. And that does make a difference. There was the ancient India, then the India colonized by Britishers and now - a India neither here nor there. The youth as such, never saw the ancient India. They never really felt the effects of post-colonialism. All they see is the after-effects of it. Which is generally a more - um - 'westernised' and globally exposed outlook The current politicians in charge are torn between 'global' India and 'ancient-wise-traditional -India'. They don't realise that it is, totally absurdity to wish for India to go back in time. Only the forward option is left. But that takes time. And we're a democracy so - India has to listen - to… [cont.]

How much money ( ) would I need to travel around India for 2 months?
Q. I am planning to travel around India for 2 months in September. I would be going with my boyfriend so we would be sharing a room. It would be nice to do it quite cheaply, but probably not staying in hostels all the time, but apparently b&b type accomodation is quite cheap. We are not extravagant but wouldn't be too frugal either. The price would include accomodation, meals, sightseeing, travel within the country, but not flights to India (which is approx 500). Any advice from people who have travelled round India would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

A. Unfortunately it's 10 years since I backpacked in India and I can't remember what I paid for anything although I have very fond memories of a lot of aspects of the trip. If you go to the Lonely Planet website, select India and then look at the Money section, it'll tell you roughly what to expect to budget for, per day. Alternatively, search through their Thorn Tree section on India and check out other people's questions & answers. Add a bit on for drinks (although they are cheap, they eat into your budget), a bit more sightseeing than you might expect, the occassional nice meal (2 months is a long time in India) and the occassional upgrade to a nicer hotel plus the odd souvenier that you WILL buy, despite any intentions not to. These petals of the flower can be either single or in daisy form. Tips on growing Chrysanthemum flowers While buying chrysanthemums select plants having plenty flower buds. It is better not to choose a fully bloomed plant, as their span of blooming is shorter than the partially blooming chrysanthemums. Separate the branches from one another and sow the stems of perennial flowers, which are having healthy roots. The adequate soil of this fall flower is well-drained soil. You need to add compost to the soil once a year. Apply one-pound fertilizer per 100… [cont.]

A. Endemic corruption in many states - The legal correction process in India proper is catastrophically slow, taking years and sometimes upwards of a decade for some cases to complete the trial process. In an era of near instantaneous decision making a 18th century judicial and legislative model - doesn't really work. Total lack of consistent infrastructure - While certainly there are some parts of the major cities which are becoming increasingly well developed from an infrastructure perspective, there is a total lack of country-wide infrastructure development, due to the vast population and actual economics of the state(s). This has dramatically improved over time, but still is spotty in many respects. Overspecialization and dependency on… [cont.]
