The list includes independent countries This is a list of sovereign states, containing 203 entries, giving an overview of states around the world with information on the status and recognition of their sovereignty. For the sake of clarity, it is divided into two parts. The first part lists all 193 widely recognised sovereign states, including all member states of the United Nations and and inhabited dependent territories A dependent territory, dependent area or dependency is a territory that does not possess full political independence or sovereignty as a State based on the ISO standard ISO 3166-1 ISO 3166-1 is part of the ISO 3166 standard published by the International Organization for Standardization , and defines codes for the names of countries, dependent territories, and special areas of geographical interest. The official name of the standard is Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions – Part 1:. Also given, as a percentage, is each country's population compared to the population of the world, which is currently 6,820,800,000.[1]

Where national data is unavailable, figures are based on the July 1, 2009 estimate by the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs is part of the United Nations Secretariat and is responsible for the follow-up to the major United Nations Summits and Conferences, as well as services to the Economic and Social Council and the Second and Third Committees of the United Nations General Assembly.[3] Because the compiled figures are not collected at the same time in every country, or at the same level of accuracy Statistics is the formal science of making effective use of numerical data relating to groups of individuals or experiments. It deals with all aspects of this, including not only the collection, analysis and interpretation of such data, but also the planning of the collection of data, in terms of the design of surveys and experiments, the resulting numerical comparisons may result in misleading conclusions. Further, the addition of all countries may not equal the world total.
